At the JHMS, we use Apple Macintosh computers ranging from iBooks, Mac Minis, MacBook Pros and the new G5 iMac. The word processing software we use is Microsoft Word Mac 2004. It is compatible with MSW 2003 (down to MSW '98) found on PCs. We do use the full MS Office including PowerPoint and Excel.
Often students have issues when they work on a school document at home on a PC. If you are not using MSW at home, it is important to save the document in a compatible format. When using Microsoft Works or Corel Word Perfect, it will be necessary to do a "Save As" and change the format to match what will be compatible at school. To do this do a "Save As" find the "File Type" or "Format" field and choose MSW 98-2003 (or similar).
If you are using the new MicroSoft Word 2007, please remember to save "down" to a compatible format. Follow the same procedure above to change the file format.
When a student is using a portable "flashdrive" device to transport work from place to place, we suggest always work from the computer and not portable drive. It is easy to lose this drive or for it to have corrupt files so when a student works at home, they need to transfer the document from the drive to your home computer, do their work, save, and then transfer it back to the drive. At school, transfer the document to the student computer account before working on it at school. Hopefully these steps will avoid any problems.
