To Help You Understand Communication Disorders

What is a speech-language pathologist?
  • Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) evaluate, diagnose, and treat speech, language, and swallowing disorders in individuals of all ages, from infants to elderly.

What is a speech-sound or articulation disorder?

  • An articulation disorder involves problems making some sounds in words. Sounds can be substituted, left off, added or distorted. These errors may make it hard for people to understand the person who is speaking.

What is a language disorder or impairment?

  • School-aged children with a language impairment cannot use language to meet the demands of the social and/or academic contexts of the school.  They may have difficulty understanding or using vocabulary, grammar, story narration and sequencing, conversation, and social skills. These students have language difficulties in both speaking and writing.
